Envisioning the future of one of New York’s most important neighbourhoods.
Grand Central Terminal, celebrating its 100th birthday in 2013, is one of the most iconic buildings and civic spaces in the world. Yet the surrounding streets and public spaces fail to live up to the experience of the Terminal.
To help ensure the continued vibrancy of one of New York’s most important neighbourhoods, the Municipal Art Society of New York announced a design challenge, The Next 100, for the future of the public realm around Grand Central Terminal.
WXY Architecture + Urban Design partnered with Kokoro & Moi to work on the challenge. WXY worked on ideas for the zoning, infrastructure and architecture. Kokoro & Moi created a scenario with examples of identity, way-finding systems, programme and place-making.
We also created Peggo, a typeface and character based on Pegasus, the magnificent creature who adorns the astronomical mural on the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal. See more of Peggo here:
